irvinformayor.comAttention, residents:
A screenshot is currently circulating on social media, shared by a misinformed City Council member who was not even present at the recent City Council meeting where the alleged incident occurred. This screenshot is accompanied by a misleading narrative suggesting that... I, Mayor Richard Irvin, made an inappropriate hand gesture toward a disgruntled resident. Let me be unequivocally clear: this claim is entirely false.
The image in question is a selectively paused frame taken out of context from a longer video clip. In truth, I was simply scratching my head after scrolling through my iPad—an action that took place nearly a full minute after that speaker had left the podium, while the City Clerk continued to read the agenda.
It is unfortunate that during every political season, misinformation, rumors, and misrepresentations are amplified to distort reality. The idea that a routine, three-second head scratch amounts to anything inappropriate is not only misleading but fundamentally baseless.
Let me address Alderman Bugg directly: No apology on behalf of the City Council is needed from you. There was absolutely nothing done wrong, and you are not in a position to apologize for anyone other than yourself. Therefore, if you find yourself in an apologetic mood, perhaps it would be more appropriate to apologize for the incident where the Aurora Police were called on you for allegedly shaking down an Aurora business for a donation. You have yet to apologize for that.
I urge all residents to approach politically motivated narratives with discernment and critical thinking. Together, we can combat misinformation and ensure that our community remains united and informed. Thank you.
