Aurora’s Neighborhood Redevelopment Division honored for work on affordable housing

A recent statewide conference praised Aurora’s Neighborhood Redevelopment Division for its programs involving affordable housing.

The division received the 2019 Illinois Community Opportunity and Empowerment Award during this year’s Illinois Governor’s Conference on Affordable Housing.

The award was given in recognition of locally approved plans, programs or projects that improve quality of life for low- and moderate-income households.

City officials said Aurora’s down payment assistance program, rehabilitation programs and investments in affordable housing were all mentioned as “benchmarking” programs.

“The city of Aurora has a long history of Community Development Block Grant programs,” said Dan Barreiro, the city’s chief Community Development officer. He pointed out the city has been a federal entitlement city since 1975.
